Getting 'clean' from nonsuicidal self-injury: Experiences of addiction on the subreddit r/selfharm

Using a mixed-methods approach, we examined addiction in the context of nonsuicidal self-injury by coding posts on the subreddit r/selfharm for adapted substance use disorder symptoms and language such as ‘clean,’ ‘recovery,’ and ‘relapse.’

Women’s substance use and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic

We examined women’s substance use and mental health during COVID-19. We found that greater anxiety about COVID-19, greater reported changes in daily life due to the pandemic, and high-risk alcohol use are related to greater mental health–related distress among women.

Loneliness and Daily Alcohol Consumption During the COVID-19 Pandemic

In this pilot study we examined the within-person and between-person associations between daily loneliness and alcohol use among adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. We found that on days when people were lonelier than usual, they drank less alcohol. However, people who were lonelier on average drank more alcohol each day.

Cultural differences in Tweeting about drinking across the US

We collected 3.3 million US geo-located ‘drunk’ tweets and examined cultural markers of drinking: religious communities had a high frequency of anti‐drunk driving tweets, Hispanic centers discussed family members drinking, and college towns discussed sexual behavior.
